This exhibition showcases the often-overlooked modernist work of women*, queer people, and people of color. Inspiring and surprising: check out 'Toboggan Woman' below, which would easily fit in a contemporary exhibit and yet was created in 1923. The portraits of Charley Toorop (see right) stood out for me in particular, using realism as a powerful tool of female-gaze representation.
Well worth the visit.

An inspiring retrospective of an impressive career. Mark's photographs evoke entire lives, from street kids in Seattle to circus performers on the subcontinent to psych ward inmates in Oregon. The agency of her often marginalized subjects comes through in each and every beautifully composed portrait. Highly recommended.
